Dell is used to disappointment. Ever since her dad left, it’s been one let down after another. But no one—not even her best friend—understands all the pain she’s going through. So Dell hides behind self-deprecating jokes and forced smiles.

Then the one person she trusts betrays her. Dell is beyond devastated. Without anyone to turn to for comfort, her depression and self-loathing spin out of control. But just how far will she go to make all the heartbreak and the name-calling stop?

My Review:

Trigger warning for rape and suicide.

Empty follows Dell who is the fat girl at school. The girl who gained weight due her parent's separation. Dell only has one friend and she had softball but gets kicked off the team. You see her struggles throughout the book.

Empty is not a lighthearted book. Do not pick it up if your sensitive to reading rape or suicide scenes.

I thought this book was going to focus more on Dell and her relationship with her father. I really wish it did. It really disappointed me in that aspect. I feel like if they reconnected, the book wouldn't have ended on such a depressing note. Dell goes through something terrible at a party and she has no one she can talk to about it. It gets spun into a different story and Dell doesn't know how to handle it.

I feel like the author did a terrible job at Dell's personality. Dell only has one personality and it's fat. That's the only thing you get from this entire book. Dell is picked on throughout the book about her weight, even her best friend chiming in. Dell does nothing to stand up for herself. That's what the message should have been. Stand up to yourself. Say something to an adult.

I really feel like this book is too negative for people that suffer from bullying to read. I feel like they will get the wrong answer to their problems from this book. But it's definitely a book that a bully should read. The bully should always be aware of what could happen when it comes to bullying people.

Empty doesn't portray a positive outcome of bullying or being obese. I was really looking to read something that had a happy ending. I'm really upset with this book. The only reason it's getting two stars is because all of the emotion Walton made me feel in the last few chapters. I was bawling my eyes out at 2:00 AM. It's not very often I cry during books and this one sure as hell made me cry.

2/5 Stars
