January Book Haul:

My first haul for the year went exactly how I wanted it to go! I didn't get over 20 books! I didn't pick up any books that I knew I was never going to read. I'm pretty freaking proud of myself. Two of these books were free from the app VeryDice and a few of them were on sale.

2018 is going to be my year of less book buying and more reading!

What books did you guys get this month?

Carve The Mark

Beautiful Bastard

Synopsis:

Cyra Noavek and Akos Kereseth have grown up in enemy countries locked in a long-standing fight for dominance over their shared planet. When Akos and his brother are kidnapped by the ruling Noavek family, Akos is forced to serve Cyra, the sister of a dictator who governs with violence and fear. Cyra is known for her deadly power of transferring extraordinary pain unto others with simple touch, and her tyrant brother uses her as a weapon against those who challenge him. But as Akos fights for his own survival, he recognizes that Cyra is also fighting for hers, and that her true gift—resilience—might be what saves them both.

When Akos and Cyra are caught in the middle of a raging rebellion, everything they’ve been led to believe about their world and themselves must be called into question. But fighting for what’s right might mean betraying their countries, their families, and each other.

When the time comes, will they choose loyalty or love?

So I finally picked this one up! I always run across it at the book stores and I haven't wanted it enough to spend almost $20 for the hard back. Well, I was shopping at Walmart and saw they had the paperback! I had to get it seeing as it was only like $10.

Beautiful Bastard

Synopsis:

When Kristin Lattimer is voted homecoming queen, it seems like another piece of her ideal life has fallen into place. She’s a champion hurdler with a full scholarship to college and she’s madly in love with her boyfriend. In fact, she’s decided that she’s ready to take things to the next level with him.

But Kristin’s first time isn’t the perfect moment she’s planned—something is very wrong. A visit to the doctor reveals the truth: Kristin is intersex, which means that though she outwardly looks like a girl, she has male chromosomes, not to mention boy “parts.”

Dealing with her body is difficult enough, but when her diagnosis is leaked to the whole school, Kristin’s entire identity is thrown into question. As her world unravels, can she come to terms with her new self?

I got this book through the app Verydice. AKA, it was free. I decided to redeem this book because it's an LGBTQ+ book and I'm really looking to expand my book selection in that genre. This book just seems a lot like If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo and I had to have it!

Fate. Hate. Love. Lies.

Which four letter word will change their lives forever?

Sydney Paige was never so mortified to hear the words "wrong number" in her life. She meant to tell off the guy who broke her best friend's heart but unleashed her anger on a perfect stranger instead. And now her world is turned upside down by the captivating man who wants to keep her on the line.

Brian Savage is living a life he's quickly come to hate-until Sydney's wild rant has him hooked and hungry for more. Soon the sexy woman on the phone becomes the lover in his bed. But Brian has secrets, and the closer he lets Syd get, the harder it is to shield her from the devastating mistakes of his past . . .

I found this book at The Salvation Army. I purchased it for .99 and you can't really beat that. This book has been sitting on my Amazon wishlist for at least a year now. The only downside is, the books I bought from The Salvation Army smelled like cigarettes. I'm currently trying ways to get them to smell better so I don't have to unhaul them.

He knows Tori wants him-hell, most women do-but she won't admit it. After months of chasing and one unforgettable kiss, it's time for Jamie to raise the stakes.

Jamie promises that soon Tori won't just want him in her bed, she'll be begging for it-and he might be right. Somehow he's found the spot in her heart that makes her open up like never before. But with all she knows about his past, can she really trust what's happening between them? Is Jamie playing for keeps or just playing to win?

I obviously had to pick up the second book to the series since it was only .99. This was a real lucky find.

Purchase: Amazon - Kindle
Beautiful Bastard

Synopsis:

1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don't get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don't fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane's survival-and that of her adoptive father-depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans, to hide in plain sight from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) "project."

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts Adriane in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief's son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening-and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules.

I got this book from Books A Million. They had a sale going on, buy 2 get the 3rd free. This was the free one in that deal. I couldn't find another one so I was stuck with this one.

A Quiet Kind Of Thunder

Sara Barnard

Published By: Simon Pulse on January 9th 2018
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult, Romance
Pages: 400
Purchase: Amazon - Kindle
Beautiful Bastard

Synopsis:

Steffi doesn’t talk, but she has so much to say.
Rhys can’t hear, but he can listen.

Steffi has been a selective mute for most of her life. The condition’s name has always felt ironic to her, because she certainly does not “select” not to speak. In fact, she would give anything to be able to speak as easily and often as everyone around her can. She suffers from crippling anxiety, and uncontrollably, in most situations simply can’t open her mouth to get out the words.

Steffi’s been silent for so long that she feels completely invisible. But Rhys, the new boy at school, sees her. He’s deaf, and her knowledge of basic sign language means that she’s assigned to help him acclimate. To Rhys, it doesn’t matter that Steffi doesn’t talk. As they find ways to communicate, Steffi discovers that she does have a voice, and that she’s falling in love with the one person who makes her feel brave enough to use it. But as she starts to overcome a lifelong challenge, she’ll soon confront questions about the nature of her own identity and the very essence of what it is to know another person.

I picked this book up mostly because I entered to win it in a contest and didn't win. I wanted it so bad, I bought it.

The Probability Of Miracles

Wendy Wunder

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Pages: 320
Purchase: Amazon - Kindle
Beautiful Bastard

Synopsis:

For the last seven years, seventeen-year-old Cam has been in and out of hospitals, fighting the cancer that is waging a war on her body. So when she's told she needs a miracle, moving fifteen hundred miles north to Promise, Maine - a place where amazing, unexplainable events are said to occur - is not how Cam wants to spend the short time she has left. If science can't cure her, what makes her mom think the mystical powers of "Miracle Town" will?

But even Cam can't deny that strange things happen in Promise. A field of electric-purple dandelions grows on a hillside. The sunsets last for hours. Hot-pink flamingoes come to rest in the frigid Atlantic. An adorable boy named Asher keeps popping up exactly when Cam needs him. And then a mysterious envelope arrives, containing a list of things for Cam to do before she dies. As she checks each item off the list, Cam finally learns to believe - in love, in herself, and maybe even in miracles, as improbable as they may seem.

I got this book because I have another book by Wendy Wunder. I haven't read it yet. At least if I like her writing, I'll have two books! Also, it was only three dollars.

Rebels Like Us

Liz Reinhardt

Genres: Young Adult, Romance, Contemporary
Pages: 490
Purchase: Amazon - Kindle
Beautiful Bastard

Synopsis:

“It’s not like I never thought about being mixed race. I guess it was just that, in Brooklyn, everyone was competing to be exotic or surprising. By comparison, I was boring, seriously. Really boring.”

Culture shock knocks city girl Agnes “Nes” Murphy-Pujols off-kilter when she’s transplanted mid–senior year from Brooklyn to a small Southern town after her mother’s relationship with a coworker self-destructs. On top of the move, Nes is nursing a broken heart and severe homesickness, so her plan is simple: keep her head down, graduate and get out. Too bad that flies out the window on day one, when she opens her smart mouth and pits herself against the school’s reigning belle and the principal.

Her rebellious streak attracts the attention of local golden boy Doyle Rahn, who teaches Nes the ropes at Ebenezer. As her friendship with Doyle sizzles into something more, Nes discovers the town she’s learning to like has an insidious undercurrent of racism. The color of her skin was never something she thought about in Brooklyn, but after a frightening traffic stop on an isolated road, Nes starts to see signs everywhere—including at her own high school where, she learns, they hold proms. Two of them. One black, one white.

Nes and Doyle band together with a ragtag team of classmates to plan an alternate prom. But when a lit cross is left burning in Nes’s yard, the alterna-prommers realize that bucking tradition comes at a price. Maybe, though, that makes taking a stand more important than anything.
